The Paris Agreement and the ecological transition: Italy must continue on the path of sustainability

22 January 2025

Rome, January 22, 2025 – The withdrawal of the United States from the Paris Agreement has raised questions about international climate change policy. This decision, which reflects a strategic reorientation towards traditional energy sources, must not slow down global efforts to tackle the challenges of global warming. Italy, which has always played a leading role in the transition to a more sustainable future, has the opportunity to continue on its path and consolidate its commitment to sustainability.
2024 was a particularly critical year for Italy, with extreme weather events affecting many areas, including torrential rains, landslides and heat waves, with devastating effects on the country’s communities and economy.

While respecting international decisions, it is crucial that Italy does not slow down on its path towards a greener and more sustainable future. Our country has the opportunity to strengthen its commitment by continuing to implement innovative and green transition-oriented projects,” said Valerio Molinari, President of the Climate Change Study Center (CCSC)Sustainability must be at the heart of Italian policy, and it is crucial that we invest in solutions that address the challenges of climate change and create new economic opportunities for our region.

In 2023, 60 percent of Italy experienced extreme drought conditions, with record temperatures reaching 48.8°C in Sicily. Predictions point to a future in which extreme events such as wildfires and floods will continue to increase. However, the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRP) represents a great opportunity to respond to this emergency, allowing the country to invest in renewable energy, green infrastructure, and resilience solutions that can spur economic growth and protect our country.

“This is not the time to go backwards. On the contrary, we must accelerate towards a green transition that not only protects our environment, but also represents a great opportunity for Italy’s economic and social future,” concluded Molinari.

As a founding member of the Paris Agreement, Italy has a responsibility to continue to play a leading role in the fight against climate change, making a commitment to sustainability a priority for the country and for future generations.
